GRIZZLY ROBOTICS
GBEF was thrilled to sponsor the Grizzly Robotics’ two-week trip to Hangzhou, China to mentor a Chinese robotics team and to also compete in a Chinese robotics competition. It was life changing for many of the Grizzly Robotics students. These students have overcome numerous obstacles while working hard to transform culture and build leaders in STEM. For 21 years, the program has changed the face of education in the community and provided hundreds of students with a safe environment, away from the violence, drugs and crime that is common in its neighborhoods. As one of the veteran First Robotics teams in the state of Michigan and a cornerstone in the community, commitment to culture change is taken seriously.

REACH MEMPHIS
GBEF honored the incredible life of Mr. Ray George in March 2020 by forming the Ray George Leadership Legacy Fund. REACH Memphis has grown over the years to currently provide a variety of summer experience opportunities, college counseling services, career exploration resources, ACT preparation, mentoring, and tutoring services to our students. REACH re-imagines their organization every year as the needs of the students and challenges of the community change. By giving REACH Memphis students a voice in the programs, roles, and focus of the organization, they are constantly on alert to the needs of the students. By engaging hundreds of professionals as facilitators or volunteers, there is access to new ideas and approaches as they witness interactions with our students. By collaborating with other organizations, REACH Memphis is able to avoid duplicate services and remain as relevant to students today as they were to students 50 years ago.

The Germany Ballintyn Education Foundation scholarship at Eastern Michigan University is helping me to fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher. As an EMU student going into elementary education with a certificate in learning disabilities, I know the difficulties students with learning disabilities face. I was a student with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and a speech impediment. My mom is a teacher and she and the Chelsea School District helped me to overcome those challenges. I am now excited to help young children learn and overcome similar challenges. I could not be more grateful for GBEEF’s help. With their investment I will be able to help kids like me.

With the Nathan Ballintyn Scholarship, I have received both financial and mentoring help that I am forever grateful for. Without the GBEF, it would have never been possible for me to go to a high-ranking university, much less be able to succeed in one. With their financial support, I can further my education for my family and myself and can study what I love without the fear of not being able to afford it. Aside from financial support, the GBEF has mentored me through challenging times. They have been there for me to support me academically and personally. The GBEF has given me opportunities I never knew I would be able to have and have helped me grow confidence in myself and my abilities as a student.

The John Mansfield Scholarship, sponsored by GBEF, has helped me bridge the educational gap that, as a first-generation Mexican American woman, has loomed over my head for years. I have wanted to study engineering since I was in elementary school, but higher education has always been tied to money for me. Now, however, thanks to the Foundation, I am free to wholeheartedly explore my interests and pursue my academic and personal goals. The support I have received from everyone at the Foundation has been overwhelmingly positive and has made me believe that I will truly thrive at UMich!
